13-Card Rummy Rules — The Complete Beginner's Guide for India
Rummy is India's favourite card game for a reason — the rules take ten minutes to learn and a lifetime to master. If you have watched family members play at gatherings and wanted to join in, this is the guide for you.
We cover the complete flow of a 13-card rummy game as played on Allfreerummy: how cards are dealt, what counts as a valid declaration, and how points decide who wins and who pays.
Sequences, Sets and the Role of Jokers
A sequence is three or more consecutive cards of the same suit, such as 5♥-6♥-7♥. A set is three or four cards of the same rank in different suits. Jokers substitute for any missing card, but only in the second sequence or in sets.
The printed jokers and the selected wild joker both work this way. A common beginner habit is hoarding jokers for the perfect hand — better players use them early to reduce deadwood points.
The Deal and the Objective
Each player receives 13 cards from two standard decks including jokers. One card is placed face-up to start the discard pile, and one random card becomes the joker for that round. On your turn you draw one card — from the deck or the discard pile — and throw away one.
Your goal is to arrange all 13 cards into valid sequences and sets. At minimum you need two sequences, and at least one of them must be pure, meaning it uses no jokers.

Declaration and Scoring
When your 13 cards are arranged correctly, discard your final card to the finish slot and declare. The app validates your hand instantly: wrong declarations end the round and you score maximum points, so double-check before you tap.
Losers score penalty points for unmatched cards, with a face card or ace counting 10 and numbers at face value. The first player to reach the pre-set limit loses, and the winner takes chips proportional to the opponents' points.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sequences do I need to declare?
Two, and at least one must be pure — formed without jokers. The second can include jokers and even extend beyond 3 cards.
Can I use the same card in two sets?
No. Physical cards are unique; two sets would need two copies of the same card, which is not possible in a standard deal.
